The research story

From scattered records to a history that can withstand questions.

The most honest story available today is the story of reconstruction: how a name moves through source systems, how a documentary floor is tested sideways, and how a tempting connection is kept open until the bridge exists.

  1. The source universe is bounded

Researchers begin with a repository, a book or collection, an event class, a locality, a date range, and a countable denominator. That boundary makes both findings and negative searches interpretable.

  2. The written form is preserved

The exact source token is captured before any modern spelling, transliteration, or search rule is considered. This keeps the record available for later re-reading and prevents the search method from becoming the fact.

  3. The whole entry is read

Names are read with dates, roles, residences, parents, spouses, sponsors, witnesses, occupations, headings, and adjacent entries. Early load-bearing fields receive independent qualified readings.

  4. Identity is tested against alternatives

Similar names near one another may represent one person, relatives, unrelated households, or an index error. A resolution records supporting evidence, counterevidence, and how to split the identity again if later evidence changes the answer.

  5. The research moves sideways

When a direct line reaches a gap, the work expands to siblings, spouses, children, sponsors, witnesses, neighbors, land, estates, occupations, courts, migration companions, and adjacent parishes. These observations create bridge questions, not automatic kinship.

  6. Publication is the final transformation

Only deceased or explicitly eligible people and rights-cleared claims enter the public export. Citations, uncertainty, corrections, Czech/English parity, accessibility, and machine-readable data are generated from the same reviewed release.

Why this makes a better story

Family memory supplies questions, language, recipes, places, and the reasons to care. Records test dates, names, ships, houses, relationships, and sequence. Neither is discarded. They are labeled, preserved, and allowed to disagree without forcing the archive to choose a pleasing fiction.

Tobit opens by placing one life inside a chain of named generations.
